Work in progress / Double house portrait

I often start my illustrations with the shadows. It’s a technique I first saw when following South Korean urban sketchers but I’m not sure how it’s called. This technique allows to immediately give volume and definition to the artwork.

Drawing the same house in 9x12, and 4x6. Next step is colour and texture. I can’t wait to show you the brick texture on this house, and the high contrast half-timbered roof.

1 Rough sketch to figure out proportions/what I want to include
2 Clean version of that sketch with precise measurements + scaled down version
3 Transferring to Arches cold pressed paper

Here’s a house portrait I painted a few months ago. The challenge was to include the massive tree in front of the house, without ruining the composition. We agreed on adding the tree through its shadows on the facade of the house. #watercolour #houseportrait
