So why does it offend me when Whitefolk say "unc"?

Words like "nigger"? Y'ALL used AGAINST US.

Words like "unc"? WE used FOR US.

You're deracializing a social role that survived generations of Black trauma and systemic violence, and using it with a cutesy casual tone like it's any other word.

Now let me be clear:

A lot of my threads center Black women/NBs/sapphics/queers, but I want to specifically center, highlight, and celebrate the histories of Black men whose narratives never make it into White "Leftist" talking points that (ironically) dominate radical discourse on race and gender.

When the state:
• refused our worth as equal citizens
• ripped our families/communities apart
• collapsed our social architectures that we built in the aftermath of historical tragedy after historical tragedy

Black men stepped into roles as "uncs" that the state would have otherwise denied them.

"Uncle" and "auntie" appear across more collective cultures (e.g. South/Southeast Asia, American Indigenous, West/Central Africa, Black America) where community is survival.

This context is antithetical to the individualist settler-colonial roots that underlie the culture of American Whiteness.
