Our image of the plague doctor is likely more based on carnival masks than on the original masks.
I imagine that turning up in one at a carnival in 1700s Italy was the clichéd 'edgy' costume of its day, basically the old timey version of the guy who turns up at your house party as Jimmy Saville.
