I’m not well-versed on genetic studies, but I think recent genetic studies have recovered it as a descendent of the Eurasian cave lion, and with those two being to African lions what Neanderthals are to us.
(Though I’ve heard on the grapevine that the genetics gets even more complicated than that!)

Depends. At the canines, maybe stronger. At the postcanines/molar level, probably weaker (in effect).
