OMG, thank-you so much to everyone who congratulated me! I still can't quite believe that I'm here, but I'm already enjoying it sooo much!!! Sorry for the lateness of the reply, and the lack of individual thanks - first two weeks have even pretty busy, but I'm basically settled in now! Thanks y'all!

Yeah, I haven't really thought about it too seriously before. I've sometimes wondered if the feathers just kinda splay out to the sides, as they do in some fancy pigeons? But of course they are different in both their arrangement and morphology.
