British / Irish "liberal cosmopolitan" comms guy with a post soviet, MENA, energy, cap markets and geopolitics background. Like sport and food too. I’m not Claude Rains but I am a cynical idealist from South London. https://about.me/paddy.blewer
A successful campaigner has to do this. However there's a massive difference between insurgent campaigning and effective governance

Because he gives them what they want. No one buys papers anymore so it's all about clicks. Car crash farage is perfect

I have been and remain a "small r" republican. I've been to the Louvre and Hermitage and there were plenty of tourists there. "Paddy the Republican" means something else, rather more complicated.

yup. my first game was at old Den, Milwall. Didnt go back for a few years.

You go to a match with your kid, and you come back alone? It's heartbreaking. Me and my old man only went to a few matches due to hooliganism, him playing and me being more interested in other sports, but I look back on those days fondly and do it with my kids. The thought makes me cry

why can't they go after them and take their pensions?

(4) What I find so upsetting is that a liberal democracy. The liberal democracy, appears to be operating like a dictatorship. "The whole point of terrorism was to terrorise people" The terror is top down. There's something chilling about it.

(3) this is not to say that what went on in long running COIN wars was not horrific. See the recent Panorama investigation into UKSF in Afghan. But. They tend to be bottom up - infantrymen lacking effective command and control doing terrible things.

(2) the stuff I know best around moral catastrophes (Ulster / Chechnya) were different because they didn't have either the videogame aspect, or the seemingly direct involvement of higher political authority.
December 2, 2025 at 8:25 PM
There's something somehow worse than other moral catastrophes of the past. It feels like a totalitarian dynamic - working towards the fuhrer - where the political leader doesn't have to specifically order murder / war crimes. The military leadership will do it to please them. (1)

Jesus. I'm very much not one of those "the SS were supermen" type authors. Max Hastings. But Hegseth at best is Haptmann canon fodder.

Assuming you have a deep fryer or have you gone full mental and used an old fashioned chip pan?

Major #PR agencies created narratives. Global banks financed. Global legal partnerships made it all seemingly legal. We should all know our roles and understand our responsibilities. I'm not saying I or teams I worked with were particularly significant, but it's drips of water that create a flood

(2) i joke about my personal association with Claude Rains' elegant cynicism but reading this I feel about little hollow. No witty asides from this south Londoner. The acceptance of Crimea & little green men and Putin's PM to President dictatorship are why we are here now.

Miller is a proper wrongun. They all want to be Schellenberg or even Heydrich but they lack the intelligence and imagination. At best Gestapo Muller. They watch Conspiracy and think "this is how it should be"

And what else happens in that time frame. Plenty more to come, I'm sure. The leak itself is interesting. Someone has it in for whiskey pete to point they're prepared to leak about a sensitive operation like this

Part of a broader pattern as well. Less co-operation with our friends than used to be the case for all the obvious reasons
