The thing I will remember most from this era is just how small and unimpressive the people are who are causing so much harm to the world right now. We were never meant to know of the existence of Karoline Leavitt, Stephen Miller, or Pete Hesgeth, to name a few. In any system of real merit they would have lived and died in obscurity. The elevation of mediocre minds is one of the most galling aspects of all of this. @stinsoncarter

Sherrill appears to be taking a page from California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s playbook. In June, Newsom similarly floated having California stop paying federal taxes — although the idea never materialized. He later told POLITICO that the proposal would be difficult, especially since individuals and businesses pay taxes to the federal government, not states. “We’re assessing it, we have looked into it, and [the Department of] Finance is looking across the spectrum of options. But it’s limited, because most of that distribution and transfer comes from individual taxpayers,” Newsom later said.

For the past eight and a half years, Tommy's pink bed that he refused to leave the ASPCA without has lived at the foot of our bed. He may be gone from our bed, but he'll never be gone from our hearts.

I am, of course, just speculating. But if so, I think it’s both a savvy move from Justice Jackson and a pretty powerful rejoinder to the increasingly noisy (and ugly) criticisms of her behavior from the right. Given the gravity of this issue, it makes all the sense in the world for a justice in Jackson’s position to do whatever she could to ensure that the underlying question (must the USDA fully fund SNAP for November?) is resolved as quickly as possible—even if that first means pausing Judge McConnell’s rulings for a couple of days. If the alternative was a longer pause of McConnell’s rulings, then this was the best-case scenario, at least for now. And regardless, imposing this compromise herself, rather than forcing her colleagues to overrule her, is, to me, a sign of a justice who takes her institutional responsibilities quite seriously, indeed—even when they lead away from the result she might otherwise have preferred if it were entirely up to her.

With all these wonderful, good trouble protests, I thought I'd tell you a story my iron worker dad told me about a strike his union was going to hold soon. The union was considering a strike, and a priest had come to bless all the iron workers. The union leader introduced the priest. A man in the audience yelled, "No faggot in a dress is gonna bless me!" A ripple of outrage went through the room. Up at the podium, the priest invited the heckler up to the stage. The man went but continued to call the priest names. Then the heckler slapped the priest and shoved him, knocking him down. The room rioted. The union leader and the priest yelled for peace, then both laughed and embraced the heckler. The room was stunned. "All that was staged," said the union leader. "That, fellas, is how corporate union busters get strikers to riot so they call the cops and bust up the line. IT'S THAT EASY. Be on the watch for this sneaky bullshit and hold the line.
