My evening film is The Canary Murder case starring William Powell and a pre-Pabst Louise Brooks. It was shot as a silent in '28 but was later dubbed and converted into a talkie. Louise Brooks has such a presence and just steals her every frame.

Reminded of how gorgeous the visuals for Kay Francis' perfume company are, in Trouble In Paradise (1932).

Now watching

THE APPOINTMENT (1982), a British horror film in which a man doesn't let a terrifying nightmare about dying a gruesome death during a planned road trip stop him from taking the trip when he wakes up in the morning

Starring Edward Woodward

Written and directed by Lindsey C. Vickers

Mesmerizing and terrifyingly inscrutable. As with David Lynch, part of what makes THE APPOINTMENT so scary is that it's difficult to put into words why it's scary. But Vickers' film goes even further than those of Lynch in a way--unlike Lynch, Vickers makes no attempt to be hip/edgy/transgressive.
