Solar, wind, and battery capacity is already booming with utility-scale solar generation increased 33.9% in the first 11 months of 2025—that’s 22 gigawatts of added electricity, enough to power about 20 million homes!

Federal Court of Appeal rules in favour of Ottawa keeping ban on single-use plastics Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal upheld Ottawa’s 2021 decision to list “plastic manufactured items” as toxic, allowing it to continue with its ban on several types of single-use items under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. These items include stir sticks, cutlery, takeout containers, grocery bags, drinking straws, and six-pack rings used to hold beverage cans which were chosen because they were the most common items found in litter and had known and accessible alternatives. This is a win for Canadian health, the environment, the safety of wildlife, and the cleanliness of our cities and roadways.

Climate Change Is Fueling Extremes, Both Hot and Cold (1 of 2) The sudden unusual cold air that gripped much of Canada and the U.S. recently would regularly be hundreds of kilometres north at the North Pole. As fossil fuel pollution traps heat and disrupts weather patterns, the mass of cold air called the polar vortex is straying beyond its usual confines. This has also meant typically cold regions such as Greenland have been relatively warmer. At he same time, Australia has been hit with a record heat wave that has pushed temperatures upwards of 50°C in some areas, leading to fires and power outages. In central Africa, brutal heat has shattered records. Climate Change Is Fueling Extremes, Both Hot and Cold (2 of 2) Weather extremes Colder colds and hotter hots across the globe with intense bouts of unusual weather such as: • Heat waves are more intense, more persistent, and extending over larger areas. • A hotter atmosphere holds more moisture and causes water to evaporate faster, drying out soils leading to droughts and worsening wildfires. • Additional moisture in the atmosphere eventually leads to an uptick in heavy precipitation events leading to sudden high amounts of rain or snow causing floods and snow squalls.

Fluorescent bulbs are out, LEDs are in As of Jan 1st, 2026, the import and manufacture of compact fluorescent light bulbs will be banned in Canada. This includes household bulbs, not the fluorescent tubes often found in industrial or commercial settings. Retailers will have until 2030 to sell their remaining stock. Compact fluorescents are being replaced with new LED light bulbs which are much more energy efficient and produce a higher quality light without the risk of leaching toxic mercury into the environment. Mercury is known to accumulate up the food chain which becomes dangerous for humans and other animals.

Canada may unstick its stalled EV market The federal government announced it will allow a limited quota of Chinese-built EVs into Canada at a 6% tariff rate, much lower than the current 100% rate. This will allow a modest number of affordable EVs into the Canadian market sending a clear price signal to automakers to compete, opening the door to investment in a modern auto sector that provides more affordable domestic built EVs. The new deal will start with 49,000 Chinese EVs per year, rising to 70,000 within 5 years, with roughly half reserved for models priced under $35,000.

European Union Reaches Agreement to Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions 90% by 2040 • The European Parliament and Council announced that they have reached a provisional agrweement to introduce a new binding target in the European Climate Law to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 from 1990 levels. • Compromises were required to reach agreement including creating a significant role for international carbon credits, biennial reviews of the new target, and a delay of the extension of the EU's ETS carbon pricing system to road transport and building sectors. • In a recent update, the Commission reported that the EU is nearly on track to hit its 2030 climate goal, noting that it has already achieved 37% reduction in emissions as of the end of 2023.

Is Liquid Natural Gas in Canada's national interest? • Global demand for oil and gas is set to peak this decade and then decline, and there are enough projects already underway to meet that demand. • The International Energy Agency has confirmed that renewable energy will grow faster than any major energy source in this decade and will make the transition away from oil and gas inevitable. • LNG is expensive to produce in Canada and becomes a risky investment as renewables are rapidly becoming the default for energy development across the Global South. It's time to face the facts, renewables are best for the economy. Is Liquid Natural Gas in Canada's national interest? • Low-cost renewable energy is soaring in China and Vietnam and demand for LNG has already peaked in Europe and South Korea. • The International Energy Agency estimates that the sponsors of around 70% of LNG export projects currently under construction will struggle to recover their invested capital. • Exporting LNG will also raise the cost of gas in Canada while wasting millions of taxpayer dollars on projects with no real future. This will only raise the already high cost of living. It's time to face the facts, renewables are best for the economy.
