The song just started again for the tenth or eleventh time in a row since I started pecking at this blurb — I deleted a whole section on the digital blorrrrrrps of a poorly-ripped MP3 and when people used to record from their soundboard so you heard their IM notifications throughout the song, but hey I guess it’s back in now — and I still haven’t parsed a single word in this song. I don’t have any idea what this song is, it’s like I’m hearing it 20 years ago. What will things be like 20 years from now? What are things like now? Have things always been like this? In my mind I was always like, no way I’m going to have kids and cater to what they want to eat, to the extent that they’re like, “I just want french fries.” (laughter). With my first child it worked out, but my second child was more picky and around 3 years old, his diet shrank considerably. I found it all frustrating and annoying. A lot of times you’re like, “I want this child to get enough nutrients to be healthy,” but you also think, “I want to get through the day.” He’s 3 years old, so it’s hard to make rational arguments. You can’t say, “Hey, if you don’t do X in the future, you’re not getting Y.” The future to a 3 year old is an amorphous idea, at least to my 3 year old (laughter). Right now he’s into particular types of rice and pasta and french fries and pizza, and he’ll occasionally eat meat or fish. He’s always been on the no-vegetable diet—you gotta trick vegetables into things. Ridiculous. I always thought, “Nah, we’re not doing that.” But I will say, I’m still a believer in not doing that, but I need him to get old enough where you understand what the future means.

Middlestream This is the key argument in my third A-pop installment. I argue that through the aughts and into the ‘10s, mainstream American pop music lowered its commercial ambitions en masse in the pre-streaming era as record industry profits collapsed. At the same time, indie music, which had always operated as an uneasy “sidestream” to mass culture, started to converge with what was left of the mainstream. This convergence process arguably peaked between 2009 (the year of GAPDY, an acronym of the five indie albums predicted to win in various music critic polls that year) and 2011 (the year Spotify launched in the US). After the convergence, what you get is less distinction between what is indie and what is mainstream. I call the compromise a middlestream, which is where lots of semipopular music, including windowpane (see below), thrives.

Windowpane A popular style of the middlestream, referring specifically to music with pop ambitions that sonically falls in an uncanny valley between indie rock and adult contemporary.2 Windowpane encompasses elements of guitar-band indie rock, retro synth-pop, and bedroom shoegaze, not necessarily in combination. It offers hooks less “sticky” than Top 40 pop, but also sounds that are softer and dreamier than what you’ll often find in indie rock or singer-songwriter adult contemporary. David Moore: A few months ago I was doing my weekly Spotify trawl and came across what sounded like a long-delayed aftershock of self-titled-era Taylor Swift. I was amused to see that this artist was Taylor Acorn, suggesting an elaborate algorithm designed to generate successive Taylor Swift clones named according to a variation on the NATO alphabet: Taylor Acorn, Taylor Bravo, Taylor Charlie. And this in turn gave me an idea for a television pilot with this exact premise, which I wrote ten to twenty minutes worth of before it fell flat. The problem, as it usually is with these sorts of things, is that the music needs to be good, and it can’t just conjure its goodness from the perspicacity of its commentary. And of course most bizzer behind-the-curtain shows fail even at this basic commentary level — the easiest part! — and are doomed to be not only bad both in show and in soundtrack, but a little insulting, too. So it’s a pleasure, if a mild one, to hear those exhausting try-hards over at Black Mirror let a decent pop song just kind of sit there. I didn’t see the episode, but from what I can tell Miley Cyrus is supposed to be a bit of a cipher, which of course she isn’t at all — and funnily enough it makes this song do almost the opposite of what it’s supposed to; it acts instead as a kind of metacommentary on how hard it is to make Miley Cyrus sound cool and competent. What, Taylor Acorn wasn’t available? [6]

But things can change. For the last few years, I’ve been following not only the main competition, but also the country-based finals, where I find much more promising music qua music. This year I rooted for Polish pop-phonk and bounce-inflected Spanish melodrama, among others, which sounded as fresh as anything I’ve heard anywhere in the world this year, and couldn’t have come from anywhere else. (Both were runners-up to lesser but still worthy entries.) Last year, two competitors who seemed clued in to a forward-thinking zeitgeist made it through to the competition—Angelina Mango in Italy and Marina Satti in Greece—and I think Go_A’s “Shum” fell into this category in 2021.8 In these examples, the competition becomes something like an incubator for emerging styles with mass appeal. This is different, and more interesting to me personally, from the most common perceptions of Eurovision that I tend to come across, which cast the event as a funhouse of timeless novelties or a kitschy wax museum of styles past their prime. But it would make sense for the competition to adapt productively in an environment where there is no presumed central power to mimic, and there is no expectation that a pale imitation of past versions of global pop success will get you anywhere. You’re better off being an oddball original.

This is a very weird thing to say about Bar Italia specifically, who do not sound anything like current AI-generated music (and have plenty of songs I like), but this part of my A.I. take from 2023 is probably going to get worse before it gets better.
One thing I think we’ll see more of now that A.I. is the buzz-idea du jour is that things we used to talk about being done “by committee” we will just shift to being done “by artificial intelligence.” We have lots of terms for facelessness and soullessness, especially in pop music, when the realistic modes of pop production are always merely shady-cabal-generated at worst. This song sounds like everyone and no one wrote it, in a way that really is faceless. But it’s not unappealing; turns out “face” is not always a criterion I care about.
