Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Gambit system is the GOAT but trivializes the story. Dungeons have CRAZY puzzles. Job system’s creative but no guard rails. War plot clicks midgame; cast gets uneven attention. The world of Ivalice is great.

Score: 3.5/5

Gambit system is the GOAT, but it also kind of trivializes the main story content. I managed to beat the story mostly on Gambits with hardly any sidequests done. The dungeons are also littered with TH...

ITS SO ADDICTIVE

Pokémon: Legends Z-A - Mega Dimension: 12/30/2025 — The new Megas were more “cool” than “meh.” They tried to handle the main threat like Arceus, but it again fell flat compared to the original game. The grinding gameplay loop is ok in short bursts, but I can’t see it having much staying power.

Red Dead Redemption: Remastered: 12/8/2025 — First replay since the original release, and I still enjoyed it. The sound mixing was awful on my PS5 version, and a few bugs/crashes made some emotional moments fall flat. Still an incredible game.

NieR: Automata: 11/27/2025 — Masterpiece. Incredible story, music, and voice performances. Thought I’d like the gameplay more, but it never felt “fun”, more like pure button mashing. The meta-narrative gameplay at the end is something genuinely unique that nobody has come close to replicating.

Pokémon: Legends Z-A: 10/24/2025 — Creative new combat and fairly modern performance do wonders for a mainline Pokémon game. That said, Arceus is still superior in story, music, and overall gameplay loop.

Hades 2: 10/14/2025 — An incredible sequel. Everything felt improved from the first. My nitpicks: sometimes I just wanted to do another run, but felt “burdened” having to talk to friends. Also, I still don’t get why full Chaos runs don’t count as a day passing.

Persona 3: Reload: 9/23/2025 — Held off forever because I’m distrustful of post–Persona 5 Atlus, but they handled the remake really well. Some of the new VA is excellent and some feels REALLY off. Great QoL improvements couldn’t save the DLC, though.

Yakuza 0: 9/5/2025 — I gave up on the series after completing (and enjoying) Yakuza 1 because of time. I’d heard 0 is one of the best, and since it’s a prequel I gave it a shot, and happy I did. I thought the two narratives would be more intertwined throughout, but still fun. Combat is still boring.

Death Stranding 2: 8/20/2025 — Improves on Death Stranding 1 in almost every way except the story. I enjoyed a lot of what it was doing, by the end it started feeling too proud of itself without earning it. Gameplay and side missions were vastly improved.
