🇮🇱🇵🇸 medieval cultural history, esp. Norse. wake up. brush teeth. sagas. rinse. repeat. not necessarily in that order.

slave trade & colonies in the New World funneled back home to england to fund a, well, disneyesque fantasy project.

i tend to think that snorri, writing of egill or óðinn, exp’ed them as somehow not *only* exotic, romantic, and mythical.

jonas wellendorf has written wonderfully on this topic.

famous. but i have no sense of immediate connexion to them, any more than to a disney castle.

and bodiam is a curious example to look at closely, not least b/c the current castle is largely an 18-19thC reconstruction of what was then imagined to be the tough, cool, 14thC. enormous wealth from the

from egill or snorri or haraldr hárfagri. that past is somehow as tangible to them as our parents or grandparents or (at least) great-uncles are to us. they don’t just believe in it; they don’t just fetishise it; they KNOW it. (i too have 10thC ancestors of course, some of whom may have been

well, yes… and no. of course you’re correct in some respects, but i’d argue that their ‘past’ (really, their Otherworld, past present or future) was real and *immediate* to them in ways difficult for us to grasp.

think about how many icelanders today are fully convinced that they are descended
