Ahead of #FFD4 earlier this year, we observed that 56% of the multidimensionally poor (according to the global MPI 2024) live in debt-fragile countries.

In countries for which data are available, the global MPI 2025 found that post-pandemic, trends in poverty reduction are beginning to point to stagnation.

Lower-middle-income countries are a hidden epicentre of multidimensional poverty, home to 55.5% of poor people. They also bear an overwhelming burden of climate hazards, with 548 million poor people in the region living in areas exposed to at least one climate hazard.

Poverty is our greatest global challenge & one which is exacerbated by climate hazards. The global MPI 2025, which overlaid multidimensional poverty & climate hazard data for the first time, highlighted the extent of this double burden.

Multidimensional poverty measures, both national and global, incorporate key information on topics including sanitation and housing, demographics recognised as key in the Belém Adaptation Indicators. We look forward to this work progressing towards human-centred climate action.

According to the global MPI 2025, 887 million people worldwide are poor and living in regions exposed to flooding, drought, air pollution and/or high heat. Understanding where poor communities are also dealing with climate hazards is critical to adaptation planning and financing.
