Because you (we) are unlucky to live during times that our digital spaces are ugly, dystopic contraptions.

Society should have been more careful. Bad things happen when people stop caring.

But we still have the option to work on alternatives 🤓🌱

Well if you send out people without their phones I would at least include an emergency flare 🤣

A system is what a system does.

While it is painful to admit, the fact that countless European entities continue financing "X" means that - at least latently, if not explicitly - they share the same system of values: Users of online platforms seen as captive consumers to be force fed "truth".

It doesnt dwell much on *who's* LLM and that dimension is imho absolutely critical in determining what are the risks with adopting these algorithms at scale.

The situation mirrors the now lost battle for "search" algorithms, an earlier form of organizing the world's digitized knowledge 🙄

It would be swell if somebody, somewhere managed to use digital technology *today* towards something unambiguously good rather than ever more dystopic nightmares

Like somebody *did* start wikipedia many decades ago and they didnt need much more than clear vision and purpose

Why is it so difficult?

in some sense also the last 🤣. There aren't really that many fundamental developments since unix to write home about.

My hunch is something from this list might eventually rise to the challenge (and the glory)

There are a number of academic databases that most libraries subscribe to that are completely independent from major corporations. In linguistics, LLBA is fantastic. Other fields have their own. The curation of these is so much better than Google. I recommend more people re-learn library skills.

we have been robbed of an incredibly powerful communication medium. Hopefully we can reclaim it somehow, in the spirit of better late than never.

Besides the chatGPT "source" of the data (🤦), for OpenAI its a multi-year projection. There is always a possibility of "AGI" in the meantime 🤣

Would be more effective if the bar indicated (in different color) the actualk spending to date. E.g., is it already past historical precedent?

But how to solve the problem of not collectively working out so many remaining problems? Babies need to grow in peaceful, clean, physically, intellectually and emotiononally nurishing environments.

Sometimes progress seems almost capricious in nature, offering only a glimpse of whats possible.

I guess the honest economist answer would be that there is no market for economic theories that solve real problems 😆

Providing sophisticated ex-post justification of existing power structures is really the main job 🙄
