A very damp, cold start to today's #MondayMorningBikeClub ride with sheets of grey rain billowing in off the moor and turning the lanes to rivers.

Took the Stooge out for a spin for the first time in ages to turn up the brightness, and it seems to have done the trick - sun is out now.

Those who know me IRL probably know that I'm bit obsessed with this bit of the moor where the vast forestry plantation of Fernworthy rubs up against Dartmoor proper.

It's a weird place of often unsettling contrasts, but that perimeter wall is also a reassuring handrail when the weather turns sour.

What's always striking is how the light softens after the squall has passed - this was a minute later...

100% worth the complete soaking that inevitably follows being caught out on the moor in light conditions like this.

God, I love the moor this time of the year...

It was such a good night - was so absorbed I forgot to take any photos but did grab these phone snaps of the band at the end of your set.

Best of luck with the rest of your tour dates.

For reasons of general crapness, tonight was my first bike ride home from work in the dark this winter.

I stopped in the dark lanes somewhere just outside Chagford on the way back and turned my lights off for a few minutes and oh my gosh, the sky was really quite something...

A change in weather fortunes for this week's #MondayMorningBikeClub

A beautifully crisp and clear morning and a quickness to the air for a ride through deep lanes to the edge of the moor.

Taking photos of ponies is normally considered valid grounds for excommunication from @dartmoorcollective.org but I'm going to bend the rules for this little crew, who clearly look like they've just dropped their "difficult", post-rehab third album.

It doesn't surprise me - there was a huge amount of water coming down off the moor in the East Dart the other day.
November 14, 2025 at 5:40 PM
Now playing... sounding brilliantly funky and uplifting and bringing some sun to this dreary grey wet and windy day.

Just finished this - gosh it's good...

Raw, honest and brave, and so deeply evocative of place - a beautiful book that I think will stay with me for a very long time.

I see the animals have activated their standard winter operating mode...

Not ridden at all for the past few weeks for a variety of reasons so thought today would be a good day to recommence my Winter routine(ish) of starting the working week with a pre-work spin on the bike (no matter what the weather).

A properly dreich and mizzly day for it...

Some words of mine have made it into @dpadartmoor.bsky.social's wonderful Wild Words compilation of Dartmoor writing which will be released as a digital magazine on the 28th of November.

Really pleased to be part of this great project connecting people with landscape through storytelling and words.

A good few weeks away, I know, but if you're in Exeter and need a respite from the festive retail madness then our son's band The Juliettes are headlining this new band showcase at Bomba down on the quay on the 23rd December.

Should be a fun night.

Also, if anyone is visiting from 1991 and needs a cover for their shoegaze EP, I may be able to help...

Walked the dog and got a bit distracted.

Only slightly channelling my 16 years old self...

Pint of snakebite, anyone?

Anticipating grain.

Looking across to Ramsey from St David's Head in a gathering squall last week.

View of the storm lifting over St Brides Bay - taken from the side door of our van from where we were camped when we woke up on Saturday morning.

I could have watched the light on the bay change for hours.

Was lovely to meet @bccamplight.bsky.social after his Saturday headline slot at Boia - been really enjoying this in the van since.

Tickets booked for The Phoenix - look forward to seeing you in Exeter next week!

A close second was @scottlavene.bsky.social possibly committing a church full of people to the fiery depths of hell with a singalong of the chorus from The Ballad of Lynsey...

Can confirm... here's our lad 12 years ago and then again on a Big Day Out on the bikes in The Lakes last year...

Fantastic opportunity here to gain experience in a freelance data role in the conservation sector.

It's a lovely team, and a chance make a real difference in improving outcomes for wildlife and nature on Dartmoor whilst also supporting local food producers.
