Security spending (on police and maintaining stability) has increased across the board under Xi's rule, compared to his predecessor, Hu. But, Xi's rule has also seen larger-sized protests, contrast to popular perception that social unrest has been suppressed.

In the past 2 days, “mass cycling” had taken place in China, starting with thousands of students in Zhengzhou. Cyclists held up banners about freedom and liberty reminiscent of the Tiananmen incident. Students elsewhere have followed suit. What’s the significance? Thread 1/n
