Thanks #ABSMemphis for taking the conversation about scholar activism to LeMonye- Owen College and the brilliant students at this HBCU. The quote I’m reflecting on: “What we gon do but fight?!”

New article alert 🚨
Just out in JSSR- I and colleagues examine how racial salience, rather than racial category, generates inequalities in an “antiracist” organization. Importantly, the title is dope!

I was surprised to learn that my grandparents, who have watched the stories since before I was born, vehemently dislike Beyond the Gates. When I asked them why, they said they like watching white folks act a fool, not Black ones 🤣 #BeyondTheGates #BTG

My audiobook came out today! After the utter relief that they pronounced my name correctly, I was blown away by Karen Chilton’s narration. Chills indeed! @ucpress.bsky.social

Another book I loved this year was @marycmurphy.bsky.social’s Cultures of Growth

It reveals you can growth mindset all you want. If you’re in a culture where you can’t make mistakes and learn, it won’t help you.

Resolving to co- create cultures of growth with my grad students and for my family.

Reflecting on some incredible books I read in 2024. First up is Circle of Hope- an account of a life-giving church where antiracist efforts result in conflict and decline. Stories like this are why my research examines the seeming impossibility of racial equity. Yet hope may be the right word here…

Finally got to see Wicked tonight and feeling emotional thinking of all the Black women and other folks who have found their own power by rejecting complicity with oppression. Ignore the people who say “maybe you’re not as powerful as you think you are.” They just can’t see it yet.
