Pretty decent cold outbreak heading our way, 1000-500hPa heights getting below 530dam. Metservice SWO mentions possible sea level snow in Canterbury!
Weather chart for 9am friday with MSLP (black lines), rainfall(green and yellow shading) and 500-1000hPa thickness (red and blue lines) showing a very cold airmass over New Zealand overlapping with the rain meaning possible very low snow on friday Friday 6 Jun A very cold and showery southerly flow spreads over the South island. Snow is possible for the hills and ranges from Southland to Canterbury and eastern Marlborough, and possible to near sea level in Canterbury. Snow however, is not expected to approach warning criteria. Showery west to southwesterlies affect the North Island. There is minimal risk of severe weather.

Damn, the shinkansen moves so fast that photos have pylons bent due to the speed of the train 😮
