Very good thread by @onethuthree.bsky.social on this 👇
Today, the conservatives (EPP) passed a major piece of EU legislation with the far-right groups in the EU Parliament, marking the breakdown of the cordon sanitaire. The EPP, under Weber, has decided to sacrifice long-term principles and stability for short-term political gains.

6/ Manfred Weber talked about the “European way” in his keynote speech in Berlin on Monday. If this is to mean anything, he and his EPP must finally stand up for what the EU stands for – not just in words, but in action.

5/ Even more, history shows that normalizing far-right forces only strengthens them. In cooperating with them, the EPP is corroding the very values and principles – democracy, rule of law, climate responsibility – that have long underpinned the EU.

4/ For the EU to remain capable of acting on fundamental topics such as the long-term budget, European industrial policy, financial market integration, or the rule of law, it needs a stable majority in the pro-European centre.

3/ Some might argue that it is within the EPP’s right to vote with the far-right to pursue the policies for which it has been elected. I think this is a serious misconception.

The EPP may well find the support of the far-right on issues like migration and deregulation. But at what cost?

2/ The omnibus vote in October was the culmination of these dynamics: an EPP that is essentially blackmailing the centrist parties; and a centre which cannot guarantee a majority even where there was previous agreement in committee; a far-right strategically exploiting the weaknesses in the centre.

1/ This is a vote long in the making. Ever since the EU elections in 2024, threats by the EPP to vote with the far-right have been looming over the VdL coalition. In the absence of a binding agreement between the centrist parties, the informal coalition has shown increasing instability.

Though we have seen before that the word "cooperation" is sometimes interpreted rather flexibly.
