EU Horizon project #101180559 | The overarching objective is to pioneer an innovative and joined-up approach to biosecurity for terrestrial invasive alien species, strengthening the interconnections between animal, plant, human and environmental health.
OneSTOP’s first datathon kicked off today 🤖

📈 Experts have gathered in Brussels to advance national species checklists in Romania, Cyprus, Portugal, and Belgium; and pinpoint the needs and priorities of their users

More highlights and key takeaways from the sessions will be shared soon 🔜

👉 Last but not least: Vespa mandarinia, the Asian Giant Hornet.
🟠 This #InvasiveAlienSpecies has very few natural predators in introduced environments.
🌱It preys on native bee species, negatively impacting agriculture and other insect species, and can also carry pathogens.

👉 Let's talk about Delairea odorata, also known as Cape-ivy.
🍃 This #InvasiveAlienSpecies can grow vigorously, covering shrubs and trees, impeding the germination and growth of native seeds.
🔴 It is toxic to animals and fish.

🪱 Today's #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Platydemus manokwari, the New Guinea Flatworm.
📍 It is a versatile and adaptive predator that has few natural limiting factors.
👉 It feeds on a variety of invertebrates and land snails, potentially altering the soil food web.

🌸 Meet Reynoutria × bohemica, the Bohemian Knotweed.
🌿 This #InvasiveAlienSpecies is a hybrid between the Japanese and Giant knotweed, inheriting their most problematic traits.
👉 Its aggressive spread outcompetes native species, and possesses the ability to damage infrastructure

🌱 On 21 October, OneSTOP’s Belgian #LivingLab had its second meeting!
👉The meeting focused on using CamAlien for monitoring and detection of invasive alien species.
📺 It was featured on numerous Belgian media channels

🌱 Here is Reynoutria sachalinensis, the Giant Knotweed. Very similar to the last #InvasiveAlienSpecies, the R. japonica.
🍃 R. sachalinensis's leaves are larger, and it also spreads via rhizomes.
👉 It outcompetes and overshadows other species, and can cause damage to infrastructure.

👉 Meet a new #InvasiveAlienSpecies, Reynoutria japonica, the Japanese Knotweed!
🟩 It is a rapid clonal spreader, growing vigorously and outcompeting and overshadowing other vegetation
🌱Its clonal expansion via roots (rhizomes) makes it difficult to eradicate and can even damage infrastructure
October 28, 2025 at 8:07 AM
🦅 Meet Pycnonotus jocosus, the Red-whiskered Bulbul!
🔵 This #InvasiveAlienSpecies may hybridise with native species, cause crop damage, and directly compete with native birds for resources
🍃 There are also concerns that it may facilitate the spread of invasive plants
