A toad may look upon a princess. He may lick crumbs of cake from her golden plate (mutter and glare all she might), and sleep within her bedchamber, yea and even squat upon her gold silk coverlet, if the King says so. We made a pact, your Majesty, you and I. Now here I am for the love you promised.

At my housewarming she gave me a small potted plant and a book on balcony gardening, saying, This is a great starter plant and you need to learn how to grow food NOW, trust me. Back then I laughed it off but now, living on alfalfa, I say a prayer for her and hope she’s doing okay, wherever she is.

Another Saturday night on the velveteen couch watching old movies with my cat, Mongkut. I’ve got a stack of thrifted DVDs (Key Largo, The African Queen, From Here to Eternity), a big bowl of popcorn, and a bottle of Bordeaux. Screw the 21st century. I’m turning off my phone and going back in time.
