Cycles of juvenile crime have prompted periodic debates since the 1970s over when kids should be off D.C. streets.

At a recent D.C. Council hearing, as lawmakers debated extending our emergency curfew, residents shared nuanced views on the issue.

@maustermuhle.bsky.social reports:
With another extension, debate continues on youth curfew
It's temporary for now, but Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to make it permanent.

Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analyzed them in 2004.

Today, building a fence with solar can be cheaper than using wood.

Reasons I like DSA despite my misgivings & annoyances over the years: genuinely multi tendency, a genuine democratic membership structure, people dedicated seriously to electoral work even with all the discontents, people seriously dedicated to labor union reform, pro Palestine, extremely pro trans.

Last year, six D.C. agencies spent $325 million more than what the D.C. council had initially budgeted.

This year, the pattern is largely repeating — and it's leading to contention between the council and Mayor Bowser, @maustermuhle.bsky.social reports in this week's Wilson Building Bulletin:

I am currently on leave from the interdisciplinary arts department. If this is an emergency: no, it’s not. Take a walk, drink water, and reflect on why you have driven yourself to distraction for an industry waiting for you to die before it gives you any roses. Art moves in deep time & so do we.
I am currently out of the philosophy department on parental leave. if this inquiry is about classes for next semester, please email the chair of the department. if your inquiry is about the nature or existence of the external world, please consult René Descartes' work
Just got the best out-of-office message I've ever seen from a fellow academic:

"I am currently away on leave. If this is an emergency... well, I doubt it. What could possibly be an emergency in my line of work?"
