Does the Speaker of the House know what's going on in the country?

It's not clear that he does, as Mike Johnson's communication strategy seems to rely heavily on being unaware. When faced with questions he should be able to answer, he has a reliable response: "I don't know."

Conservatives online say they're upset that Bad Bunny will headline the Super Bowl. To be extra clear: Bad Bunny is Puerto Rican – a U.S. citizen.

Two scholars who study national identity and #immigration say the outrage is more about who gets to be seen as American.

The real reason conservatives are furious about Bad Bunny’s forthcoming Super Bowl performance
Puerto Ricans like Bad Bunny complicate the administration’s campaign to portray America as an English-speaking, homogenous nation.

Now we're talking: Hakeem Jeffries just called JD Vance's bluff and challenged Trump and GOP leaders to meet TOMORROW in front of the press to discuss the shutdown. Allow the cameras in. Full transparency.
Meiselas: You’re saying to Donald Trump, to Senator Thune, to JD Vance: show up at the Capitol. We’re going to do this in front of the press and address these issues before the American people, correct?

Jeffries: That’s my position—and we’ll even let Mike Johnson into the meeting as well.

I'm so tired of seeing stories about who is to blame for the most recent government shutdown. The guy at the top is always responsible for what happens on his watch. But accepting responsibility is not high on anyone's list these days.

It seems that people are more committed to being Republicans and Democrats (classic us vs. them), with all their shameless vitriol, than to being decent human beings. How did we lose our humanity? How did we become no better than savages once again?

Interesting poll results from today's Washington Post (Why am I reading that rag?).

Saw this paragraph in an article on Vox today. Seems Republicans are not only allergic to restricting the president's power, but also allergic to doing the right things.

It is no surprise that the indictment is sloppy, vague, and misleading, for this is an act of vengeance and not justice—which is what makes the case so dangerous.

I don't have a subscription to the Wall Street Journal so I couldn't read this article, but I admit that I am curious to see what he has to say.

I remember when it was enough to get a good education and to apply yourself to become a good person - one who could think and make one's own decisions. I guess what you would call a smart person. The current obsession with smart devices is so dehumanizing.

This article made me feel nostalgic. I miss my grandmother's wonderful holiday fruitcake.

I was recently re-listening to "Letting Go of God" by Julia Sweeney. It's hilarious and enlightening. She laments that she had never really learned critical thinking skills that would be useful as she tried to understand the world around her. That seems to be a pretty common problem in the US today.

I read that Proton is moving parts of infrastructure to Germany because of uncertainty surrounding a proposed Swiss surveillance law that could force tech firms to retain or hand over user data and may consider a full exit at some point. Concerning since Germany is part of the 14 Eyes Alliance.

Sadly, after two years, I have decided to stop using Proton Mail and Proton Drive for my small business. I continue to have problems with clients being unable to access Proton Drive as their corporate IT departments block access. And Proton Docs - just developing too slowly.
