Deutsche Welle is blocked in many countries. BigTech bans apps from their stores so that they can do business in autocracies.

DW is responding with ‘DW - Access’. It circumvents censorship, can be installed directly, and can be used during an internet shutdown. corporate.dw.com/en/dw-access...

Since yesterday, the Taliban in Afghanistan have shut down the internet. Without the internet, many people are severely restricted in their daily lives. @ioda.live is a reliable source for tracking internet shutdowns. The measurement data is completely transparent and therefore quotable.

The shutdown is still ongoing!

Only a limited amount of information is coming out of #Myanmar following the heavy #earthquake. Publicly available measurement data from @radar.cloudflare.com shows a significant drop in internet traffic in the country. This indicates that parts of the infrastructure has been destroyed.

The drop in internet connectivity is still ongoing after the #earthquake this morning in #myanmar ioda.inetintel.cc.gatech.edu/country/MM

There is not much information from #Myanmar after the #earthquake with the epicenter near the 2nd largest city, Mandalay. The internet is partly disrupted. This is shown by data from @ioda.live, @radar.cloudflare.com, e.g. from the provider MPT. Internet restrictions makes it harder to report.

It seems that WhatsApp and Signal are also blocked in #Turkey. @ooni.org data shows that the blockings are not implemented by all Provider in 🇹🇷. Considering that for many people, digital communication is extremely important in daily life, blocking it is a serious violation of fundamental rights.
March 20, 2025 at 7:55 AM
But in #Turkey in specific, people know how to help themselves and are immediately looking for solutions to bypass the blockings. VPNs are helpful. But proxies can also help. DW, for example, has been blocked in Turkey since 2022 and can be accessed via www.dwturkce1.com.

#Turkey starts blocking platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and X. Data from @ooni.org indicates that the first internet providers (not all!) in the country are implementing the blocking at around 5 a.m. today. The mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoğlu, was arrested in Turkey today.

And at Google Playstore as well (googlecensorship.org):

#TikTok has now disappeared from the US Appstore. This is shown by data from applecensorship.com. The deadline for TikTok to hand over its business to a US company expired today.

Most media in Russia are blocked via the Internet. dw.com has been blocked since March 2022. YouTube was still accessible and people in 🇷🇺 used it. Since 18 December, YouTube has hardly been accessible 🇷🇺 either. This is shown by data from ioda.inetintel.cc.gatech.edu.

Bluesky trends in Google search requests, but you can see also a real usage of Bluesky in the increasing traffic.
