I think it's because we overestimate people's desire actually put work into ANYTHING, unless it's their current focus.

They know they need to put work in for Politics, media literacy takes effort, seeing through rehtoric is frustrating. Most people just don't care that much.

Primaries would require meetings and discussions of policies, and well, didn't they vow to not have any of those with consituents?
