The Gemini release notes come with

"Note that the testing with Community PyRAF has highlighted issues with PyRAF itself when run with 64-bit binaries"

However, no issue was raised for this in the PyRAF repository.
May I ask to open a bug so that it can be fixed?

We are mapping the stars on the Magellanic Clouds to uncover their formation and interaction history.

The 1001MC survey will collect spectra for around 500,000 stars, measureing velocities ane elemental abundances.

It depends on what you mean with "standard astronomical software". Most Open Source software is portable. IRAF is there, DS9 is, most Python packages (Astropy&Co) are, … ESO-MIDAS could work but may need complilation; same for SourceExtractor. TOPCAT should just work as well as other Java packages.
