I wonder if a modified shell would allow for a bigger flat LiPo battery? Might need to swap the position of the motherboard screws and bottom shell screws. (And maybe change to smaller tantalum caps)

Go for it. These are a breeze compared to later models. The trick is getting a replacement that will hold up half as well as the original battery. It's a crap shoot. Hope you got a good one

I usually use flush cutters to cut them just above the base then trim the plastic seat. That leaves the pins attached, which I get with some flux and an iron.

Hasn't failed so far. Only risk is sending the top half of the old cap flying across the room.
