Benny courts death with venom-purple lipstick, looks across the court at Jordan folding neatly in half and folds a lip between teeth. She’s not one for sports. There are more sporting games she prefers, with predator and prey in place of players, but Jordan invited her to watch basketball on a Saturday afternoon in pervasive summer sunlight and those straight leg jeans that struggle to encompass Jordan’s thighs. The hang and sway of Jordan’s basketball shorts entrance Benny’s studious attention, even when bothered by affable attempts of socializing from other onlookers. Her voice is deadpan and dripping with venom-purple malice, “I am here to watch the game.” She’s here to watch the flex of Jordan’s calf on rotating an ankle, deltoid bulge with pass and shot, the competitive smirk curve of panting mouth. She knows who wins only by the body language and tone of each side’s “good game”. Jordan wipes sweat from her forehead with the bottom of her shirt, takes her water bottle offered by friend and teammate. “Is that your villain?” She follows the pointed gaze to a very obvious attempt of casual civilian clothing, and can’t help but grin at the large pair of sunglasses staring back. “Uh, yeah.” Friend and teammate frowns, hands on hips, shifts weight from one sneaker foot to the next. “She’s like, your boss. Isn’t it weird to invite her?” “Ah, well.” Jordan rubs the back of her head and looks again to the sunglasses now rapt by the broad defined chain of muscles broadly defined by ‘shoulder’. “It _would_ be weird.” It’s obvious how this is not weird. How Benny was restrained only by her own fluster and fumble that led to Jordan making the first move. “Just don’t die, or get fired.” Jordan laughs awkwardly at friend and teammate leaving to catch up with their third teammate. She waves just as awkwardly at the staring sunglasses and hopes, when precisely pointed venom-purple nails curl and straighten in return, that Benny brought both makeup remover and antivenom in her handbag.

Drawing the concentric circles for these wheels with a drawing compass all nice and geometrically perfect since I'll be introducing so much human error when I actually carve them

Matthew starts a lot of fights just by existing and he'd surely end them too if Dustin didn't come running to break them up every time

Dustin pushes Matthew further away from the grasping arms and cursing voice. His attention is on the disadvantageous side of the mismatched numbers but catches that Matthew lets him. "Dude's trained in breaking ribs. Don't mess with him, come on." They look Matthew up and down, resizing him and his lifeguard uniform. Dustin feels himself a moment too close to Matthew's experience in not only this form of judgement but those of the people who begrudge him and the people who come onto him after long leers. The pause, at least, has defused shout and curse and grasping fisted hands. "Yeah, but like, on unconscious people." Dustin levels a look at this out of town guy, then a cousin's friend, and a cousin. They all stood against his arm, shuffling subconscious push of chest to establish the threat of their mass. "Dude, no." Padme aghast at Anakin meme. Anakin: Don't mess with him, he's trained to break ribs. Padme, laughing: On unconscious people, right? Padme, serious: On unconscious people, right?

Neph doesn’t bring the coffee table home. He doesn’t want to look at it. He’s pissed off about it. He was fully ready to chuck it on the train tracks behind the shop until someone offered four times rent for it. So he’s taking it out on Gauss. And the new coffee table. “You fucking,” Gauss speaks between choked grunts, “—you’re going, to break, this one too.” On the fire escape, Gauss hands a beer to Neph who sits back with his feet on the railing. It’s exchanged for a drag of Neph’s spliff that Gauss hands back once he’s seated next to Neph on the busted futon couch they dragged out here, his arm across Neph’s shoulders. Neph doesn’t mind that Gauss cuddles after getting railed. He minds that Gauss refuses to admit he wants to cuddle after getting railed. He also minds his phone buzzing next to him on the cheap, lumpy mattress. “For real though, what’s your fucking deal right now?” Gauss shifts so more of him is pressed against Neph but looks away to drink his beer when Neph eyes him.

"Yeah, man." Under Dustin's hand, Matthew's shoulder is warm with summer and cool with the shade. The soft woven cotton of his flannel, the soft body underneath reminds him to retreat his touch. He is always remembering the boundary Matthew placed between them, the boundary he wants nothing more than for Matthew to drop, but only if that's a decision Matthew truly makes himself. "It's what I'm here for." Matthew laughs, "Nah, you're here for this," and steals more huckleberries from Dustin's jug.

His cabin is intentionally hard to notice. Clad in scavenged wood, it looks one part shack and one part collapsed against the bare rock face of the hillside. The soft dirt of decades of decomposition slumped against the rock face hide much of the actual structure.

Been dog hike remiss of late
