unfortunate catch-22 of US policy in much of MENA is that it has helped render far more moderate oppositions to their policy regimen to dust and then act surprised that there's little left except for Islamists

true, but there’s also the time-honored “keep the goddam G-men outta my backyard” impulse at play
Excited to see how the old “local cops hate when feds meddle in their affairs” trope plays out in a context where the feds are actively trying to subsume the concept of policing itself
