Yeaaaah so IT WASN’T SUPPOSED to be a dog bed.

Echem. They commandeered it and no matter how many times I tried to reclaim it, that is the ONLY bed the three dogs all wanted 😭😭

She did help after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. She also made the journey to Antarctica (1941) under the command of Adm Byrd to evacuate Americans during World War II.

Yes the CG keeps their ships running for a VERY long time. 🤣

Now, about the cutter the Bear. The OG Bear was a dual steam-powered and sailing ship. She was captained by Michael Healy. (The ice breaker CGC Healy home ported here in Seattle is his namesake)

For most of her service she operated in Alaskan waters.

I got to meet the last Objee when I was a little girl and my Dad was teaching at the academy. In 1984 Objee XXXI, was retired to a Widmark Farms in New York.

Not only should the new mascot not have those weird abs- Objee was A BLACK BEAR not a brown.

Objees ate in the cadet wardroom and even showered with cadets. 31 bear cubs fulfilled mascot duties. They were housed near the Observatory and you can still see where they were kept.

She was captured on the dock at 2 a.m. after “she destroyed, to wit, one first class United States Marine who sought to pass in the night.”

After that she went on to live at a zoo. Objee II arrived at the academy and was a lot more chill

The original Objee was a menace regularly out of her pen, one time climbing into an officer’s new car, and shredding the interior.

She was exiled to the Navy Yard in DC, but broke out again.

And yes for about 57 years the Coast Guard Academy kept real live black bears on campus. The first bear was Objee short for “objectionable presence.” Because the city where the academy is located objected to the presence of a live bear.

I’d also admit it though.
