I am reminded of something P.D. James wrote in “Children of Men,” also about a university context:

I have heard all the explanations before. I still don't understand, and at this point I really don't care to.

The most powerful people in this country live in delusion land and it is well past time we as a nation stopped entertaining them.

I'm with you. Their needless, self-destructive, and frankly delusional cruelty is the one thing I've struggled to understand throughout my entire adult life. The outcome is obvious. The wider benefits are indisputable. The facts are there. And yet...

The investment side is what is fueling the economy rather thsn the companies themselves. At this point the whole thing is a giant ponzi scheme, where the value will never materialize but speculation keeps it afloat.
