Uh oh, looks like chlorosis. Probably from the water being very hard... I'm gonna need to add some iron...

My babies look happier now: thicker, more mobility, more intense colour... Some will become adults this summer! #worms #eisenia #vermicompost 🌱🪱🦗

They told me it's not possible to grow big tomatoes in an apartment. I am proving them wrong. They told me I am crazy for putting them on the ceiling. If they think that way, maybe I am in the right path. Tomatoes, you just keep sunbathing! 😁🌱

I had some unlabeled seeds and planted them to see if I could identify it. I have no idea, plant.net identifies it as probable Vicia bithynica (only 11%!!), does anyone know?

🌱Last year my kids threw some grape "moscatel" seeds in the big planters because they felt lazy to throw them in the trash. Ok, blessed by the deadly sin😁🍇

The potatoes barrel is working very well. It will be the 1st time since I have been growing potatoes at home when the plant lasts so long it will produce flowers! 🌱🥔

"Attagirl, take good care of those tomatoes!! Don't let them escape anywhere!"🌱

Luffas are taking it easy, hoping they'll start growing faster as soon as days turn warmer 🌱

Also, and very important: during summer I stopped feeding the worms with kitchen waste, and only used cardboard and coffee/tea grounds. They loved them and avoids hight temperatures from rotting.
Worms started reproducing as crazy, I had to build a new composter quickly.

There is also a faucet for water change and a control valve to avoid overflowing. In between the water and the compost with worms there is a layer of cardboard.
May 6, 2024 at 11:35 AM
The idea is like the terracotta cooling: using a wicking bed on the composter to cool off the boxes contents.
It is very simple: you can fill up 1/3 of the content in the box with water and the upper part with the waste, compost and worms.

The system is very cheap and efficient: two containers, one with a lid, some silicone and there you are.

In 2018 we moved to a bigger flat (2 levels) out of the center of our city. Lots of space. So we decided to create the new vermicomposter by using styrofoam containers, as the ones used in local markets for fish or veggies
May 6, 2024 at 10:55 AM
First of all, the volume is very limited: as far as you produce more waste for the worms to digest, this system gets overflown. Also, the exudates can be very valuable as liquid manure, so it should be collected somehow. That is the 2nd step: another bucket to collect lixiviation
May 6, 2024 at 10:47 AM
So we started with the 1st model below: the simplest vermicomposter is just a bucket with some holes on top and bottom. Just add some kitchen waste and bury it to avoid flies.

Hi bskyers 🌱!! As I mentioned before there was a little disaster this year with my colonies of Eisenia fetida (redworm), and after all the years I have been struggling with these, I think it will be helpful to share my experiences with those who are starting or are considering it.

🌱 Main target today at the protogarden: clean a way from weeds so we can access some areas easily - wheelbarrow wise. The new pitchfork was critical for having the task check marked.

🌱 Initially I planted the fava beans having the only purpose of soil improvement, but learning how to cook them is an unexpected delight

🌱 It looks like the Gynandriris sisyrinchium (Barbary nut) has produced a lot of seeds. I have never tried sowing the seeds but it sounds tempting
