The work has already been done. All the Govt needs to do is support Adrian Rurawhe’s Members Bill. We urge Govt to listen to the voices of campaigners including Sonya Rockhouse and Anna Osborne. It is past time that our law is updated to ensure justice for victims.

Tragedies such as the Pike River Mine disaster demonstrate that corporations can and do kill workers. One worker dies every week on the job, and 17 more from work-related illnesses. Every single death is preventable.

Fifteen years after Pike River: Time for leadership on workplace health and safety
Aotearoa’s workplace health and safety record has seen little improvement since Pike River. We need stronger leadership and better enforcement to reduce harm and improve outcomes.

We haven’t meaningfully reduced our number of work-related deaths since 2010. Our injury rate remains high and costs New Zealand over $5 billion a year. Something needs to change.

New Zealand kills twice as many workers as Australia and four times as many as the U.K. per capita. Despite the introduction of WorkSafe in 2013, we’re seeing issues with weak enforcement, inadequate fines, and a Workplace Relations and Safety Minister hellbent on taking us backwards.
