so much of playing these games as a kid was just accepting everything at face value, like oh I guess these trainers have whips some people whip their Pokemon that's not good but that's just how it is

because of how small sprites are and the limitations of the gameboy, I didn't read the big circle on your rival as a necklace. It always looked like he was holding a coin on a string like Hypno and thought "that's random, but I guess that's just how it is"
