They delve into philosophy’s potential, share first-hand reflections on engaging beyond academia, and offer interventions on urgent issues, including climate change and the morality of prisons and healthcare.

The volume argues for more reflective, ethically grounded policymaking and debate.

Evidence shows the two-child limit and benefit cap failed to meet their aims and increased hardship. Alex highlights how solutions such as a supportive benefits system, good jobs, affordable housing and childcare, plus free school meals and family services, can help to level the playing field.

The takeaway? Digital life is neither wholly positive nor wholly negative. Experiences and use differ across contexts, identities, age and platforms. Data often fails to capture marginalised voices, reflect new behaviours, and keep pace with technological change.

We examined existing data and asked:
1️⃣ What access do young people have to this tech?
2️⃣ How do they intersect with experiences of growing up?
3️⃣ Where are the evidence gaps, and what questions need deeper exploration?

3️⃣ Support could come in different forms. Young people called for better regulation, effective content moderation, more parent involvement, consistent school policies and safer digital spaces where they can be themselves.

2️⃣ Platforms are poorly regulated. Algorithms and online advertising often encourage addictive behaviours, intensify consumerism and leave young people frustrated by the manipulation and lack of control. Yet, some are finding ways to regain agency.

They told us:

1️⃣ Constant access to digital technologies is a double-edged sword. While it connects them to opportunities and communities, it can also amplify pressure, misinformation and overwhelm. For them, social media is essential to communication, making it hard to step away.

A final evaluation carried out by the @theeef.bsky.social showed that NELI boosts young children’s language skills by an additional four months, and that pupils eligible for Free School Meals made up to seven months’ additional progress.
