When young leaders like Triston Ezidore step up, it gives me hope for public education’s future. From student body president to the youngest School Board President in the US, and the first Black, gay man to serve on his board, he’s proving what’s possible when lived experience meets purpose.

Flashback — can’t believe it’s been over a decade since I joined the California Faculty Association at Cal State LA.

I’ve made lifelong friends while being part of impactful work. I’m especially grateful for the experiences that led me to serve as Chapter Vice President and Faculty Rights Chair.

The headline is a little overstated. California’s new literacy law doesn’t “change how kids learn to read” overnight, but it does add phonics-based reading training and new K–8 textbooks. Teachers already teach phonics, but there’s often no funding attached for training.

Every year I meet students who are scared to be themselves, and this year that fear feels heavier. The people in power should be protecting them, not making them targets.

National Coming Out Day means standing up for our kids when it’s hardest. I’m not backing down from that.

Honored to have the support of LA City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, a lifelong organizer who’s spent decades fighting for South LA, expanding affordable housing, advancing tenant protections, and bringing people together to build real power and deliver results.

CFA today filed a lawsuit against the CSU. We seek an order prohibiting the CSU from disclosing CFA members’ personal info in response to federal subpoenas without providing notice to workers and an opportunity for them to object. Read more in our press release:

Michael Benjamin’s journey through Sacramento schools to School Board is what public education was meant to create: leaders who give back. A lifelong educator, he’s turned classrooms, barbershops, and neighborhoods into places of hope, building spaces where education meets equity and opportunity.

Honored to have the support of Monrovia Unified School Board Member Michael Ocon, a leader who turns compassion into action. From defending immigrant families to advancing educational equity and rebuilding through the Eaton Fire Collaborative, he embodies true public service.

Dr. Rose Lopez has worn nearly every hat in West Covina schools: student, parent, teacher, and now on the West Covina Unified School Board. She has spent decades ensuring students have the resources to thrive.
