He was sober. He was sober. "It would be rude of me to refuse this-a slap in the face to someone just trying to do a nice thing for an old friend," Daniel thought. He knew he was making concessions for himself but he couldn't stop himself-he couldn't quiet the voice beckoning him on. "If I tell him I don't drink, that'll raise more questions and I don't have it in me to unload all that baggage right now. Besides, it would make him uncomfortable. It's just one beer with an old buddy. One beer never hurt anybody. One beer is nothing." He put the glass to his lips, tipped it back with a shaking hand, and took on a mouthful of the ice-cold lager. He held it in his mouth for a moment, savouring the crisp malty flavour, noting the hint of sweetness hiding behind the primary notes. It was tasty-better than the shit he used to drink to save money when he was a dumb kid. The earth moved underneath him-his regret vibrating through his core and reverberating through his whole body, like someone shaking him and screaming, "What are you doing?" in his face. He placed the glass down on the bar and licked his lips, ignoring the way the ground shook. He knew nobody else could feel it.

Max looked across the table at Bryony with wet eyes, unsure how to react. His emotions were intense but disjointed-as if they belonged to someone else and he were merely the vessel in which they were contained. Something inside him knew that he couldn't handle these feelings, that letting him experience the raw power of his guilt and his fear and his regret and his longing would undo all the hard work he'd done to ravel himself back up after so many years of being fully unspooled. Walls were put up around his heart to protect him from himself, to keep him from striking the wrong nerve at the wrong time and losing everything all over again. Without thinking, he pulled the hood of his sweatshirt over his head and balled the cuffs of his sleeves into his fists, regressing into the sensory comforts he leaned on as a small, autistic child who just wanted to feel safe in a terrifying world. It was as close as he could get to hiding under his blankets from the big, scary monster-and Bryony had known him long enough to know exactly what he was doing, even if he didn't.

Decided not to do pointy nails since I do have to stick my fingers in my eyes every night and day as a contact lens wearer and that scares me. They are fucking long though (for me).

"Plain clothes-gotcha," Max said. "Um, I think I might have a yarmulke packed away somewhere, too." "We have extras if you don't," Avigail said. "I might even have some of your old ones packed away in the attic with your old clothes. It might be nice to see you in that nice purple one from your bar mitzvah. It's been a long time since I've seen you in it." "Bubbe's tenth yahrtzeit," Max said morosely. Max's grandmother-Avigail's mother-had passed away when he was sixteen years old. Her death had come as a shock to the family-she'd been healthy and active with no signs of illness. Her funeral was the first coming together of much of her extended family since Max and Marina's bar and bat mitzvah, and they continued to gather on the anniversary of her death to light a candle in her memory and pray with her rabbi. On the tenth anniversary, Max had arrived to the synagogue high on a combination of heroin and cocaine. Until that point, his addiction had been a poorly-kept secret, something that his family turned a blind eye to with the misbegotten hope that he would clean up his act before the problem became too severe. But, finally, they had to face the truth-Max's erratic behaviour and worrisome weight loss could not be denied.

Daniel had been doing well, Armand thought-married for a second time with another daughter on the way, one of the highest paid freelance reporters in the country, substance free for years. He was finally coming into his own as a journalist and as a man, and it made Armand happier than it had hurt him to see Daniel living the life he always wanted for him. He tucked his signed book into the shelf in his office and glanced at it whenever morosity overwhelmed him, reminding himself of how much had changed since he'd taken those memories from him. That's why it was a surprise when Louis dropped a tabloid magazine into his lap and told him to turn to page seventeen.

Not sure where this is going yet.
Daniel was holed up in his new apartment, fresh off signing his divorce papers and giving primary custody of his daughter to his now ex-wife. He had been clean for two months, but he was already resigned to it not sticking this time-he could feel the inevitability of relapse in his bones, like something gnawing away at the marrow. Still, he wanted to try staying clean, for now at least, because, even though he knew she'd be better off without him, he didn't want to lose what little time he had been granted with his daughter-every other weekend and alternating holidays. He sat on his couch and stared at the wall, the record that had been playing long since ended. His body was tense and he tried to think of anything other than how good it would feel to put a spike into his vein. Anything at all.
