The lesson I learned from the form of Hunger, which I still consider an exceptional novel, and which surpasses Joyce's work in many respects, is a simple one: life is unpredictable, full of tensions and an almost unbearable intensity, anything can happen at any time, but the expectations we have, based on presumptions and prior knowl-edge, take the excitement out of daily life rather as plot structure and the construction of character can do in classical novels and films. We are not vulnerable, we are safe, we live in a secure and predictable space. Novels and films, news and reportages protect us by confirming this.

"What might be called use value in the reception of cultural assets," Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer noted in 1944, "is being replaced by exchange value." As they saw it, "those who spent their money in the nineteenth or the early twentieth century to see a play or to go to a concert respected the performance as much as the money they spent." But in the 1940s culture industry, "Everything has value only insofar as it can be exchanged." This means, as Adorno explained elsewhere, that the consumer at a Toscanini concert, for example, is "really worshipping the money that he himself has paid for the ticket."

Oh yea... We rented this house and one day in a flash I saw the staircase as a canvas and made this. It's some sort of "wall decal" material that, e.g. retail stores use for changeable displays. Peel and stick, removable without residue. This might be similar: www.vistaprint.com/signs-poster...
