Personally I utilize ethernet and have my router in the same room as my VR setup. VD works smoothly (sans the occasional hitch when it fails to find VD servers and switches to local). I cannot comment on the 3S, only that the 3 itself is not an upgrade path I recommend.

Wires are not fun, but the quest2/3 do not have a long charge. Plus a decent cable is much cheaper than an additional battery bank. As for wireless streaming, it really comes down to your wifi setup and where the router is located. It's why I didn't mention VD earlier, since it's an extra $25.

Oculus Rift S is a really good budget offer, and the Quest 2 is a decent bump-up. Do not get the Quest 3, it's rough. Beyond that, Steam is the best. Also, if you do get a Quest 2, be sure to also buy a 3rd party head strap and a long USB cable for long sessions.

I dont like making these kind of public posts but I'm not sure if I'd have the time for making online art in the event my father passes sooner than later. It's stressful and it scares me.
