so i might have just wrote a mini query language for poking down into arbitrary atproto data to find shit...

yeah. current syntax is:
field.nested path navigation like you expect. if those fields exist and have meaningful values, you'll get the value at the end of the path. you can also do array indexing.
field..nested - scoped recursion. basically you know this probably has a field with a certain name somewhere in there, but not exactly sure how deeply or what the intervening fields are called.
...author (also works with an initial field to scope it slightly) - global recursion. you want the value all of the fields with that name anywhere in your data
array.[..].inner - collection wildcard. you want to look in the values at that stage (either an array or an object) for the contents of that field, and return the contents mapped over the collection. so if not all posts have an embed (with potentially multiple alt texts, in cases where there's multiple images) and you go post.embed.[..].alt you get, roughly, a vec of Option<alt>s](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:yfvwmnlztr4dwkb7hwz55r2g/bafkreibkxihnpltsamidiwqc3ux5pzflbyf65kz3al5xomlzghkuurpvru@jpeg)
