“I have breathed so many deep breaths of life on this sea. I feel a deep hope, for all of us, to keep the struggle going. This, too, the Palestinians have taught us. If Gaza falls, we all go with it. The free world hinges on a free Palestine” - Aid worker on Flotilla

Falls from the border wall accounted for at least 87 deaths in just California, New Mexico, El Paso, and Yuma alone, almost all occurring since new border wall construction under the first Trump administration.

None of the Use of Force deaths from the three sectors where we had full access to this information were reported by the OPR, and only 3 of the 21 in-custody deaths.

This serves to massively misrepresent the extent of Border Patrol’s involvement in the migrant death crisis.
August 14, 2025 at 4:45 AM
Tasked with investigating and reporting CBP-related deaths, the OPR instead serves to cover up cases, routinely recording different causes of death than those reported by the local medical examiners or neglecting to report relevant cases at all.

Our database compiles information obtained via public records requests to local medical examiners, coroners, police, and other sources, and compared this data case-by-case with CBP’s data.

This data will not bring anyone back or undo the decades of suffering and death caused by US border policy, and it does not account for the tens of thousands of disappeared—but it is the most comprehensive record to date of people who died crossing the border.

These attacks against immigrants should be seen for what they are: an act of authoritarianism, an injustice against migrant communities, and a violent attack on human rights. We stand firmly against the decades of U.S. imperialism, racism, and fascism that have led us to this moment

Since Trump was elected, immigrants have been under attack. From the removals of students protesting a genocide, the end of all pathways to asylum, the deportation of hundreds to El Salvador, to now: Revoking legal status for more than 985,000 refugees.

"This is a clear example of the rise of authoritarianism and undermining of democratic values under Trump, and we must call it out and denounce it swiftly." -Detention Watch Network

CBP: “Tucson Sector is not enhanced by humanitarian aid volunteers…the agency is able to provide medical and rescue support when necessary.”

What kind of emergent situation would warrant a "necessary" response? CBP and Border Patrol leave people to die every day. 🧵

This Christmas, so many volunteers were out in the desert replenishing water and food supplies and tending to our aid station. As we move into the next administration, we are reminded of the strength of direct aid, and how many amazing volunteers and supporters we have to keep our work going.

In our latest report, the El Paso Sector Migrant Death Database, we found that women made up over 50% of recovered human remains in that sector in 2023.
December 10, 2024 at 9:07 PM
But all along the border, under a Democratic president, more women and children are dying than ever before.
“In 2022 and 2023 the river was more deadly for women who made up one in five drownings. In 2023, one in ten deaths were of children.”

The report underscores how militarization, particularly Operation Lone Star, has had increasingly deadly effects for people seeking safety and refuge in the US.

More militarization = more death and suffering

We have been rendering life saving humanitarian aid in the desert for 20 years now. Our team of volunteers leave supply drops out in remote parts of the desert, run a humanitarian aid station, document Border Patrol abuses, and operate a missing migrant hotline.
