Started my run with Smoke last night, time to look back at last season of Kombat League. I mained Nitara, easily one of the most unique characters I’ve played. She’s got a whole button dedicated to flight & air dashes. Had a positive W/L, but feel like I hit a wall competitively. Still rad though.

BURNING PARADISE is one of my favorite discoveries from recent years and I’m very eager to see more of Ringo Lam’s filmography. Just got a copy of CITY ON FIRE so that’s what I’m doing tonight.

My copy of THE CAT still hasn’t arrived, but @monsterpopcorn.com brought his and that’s how we’re celebrating my birthday (well that and pizza and cupcakes). First time watch and very stoked.

Kicking off my birthday (as of midnight) with Steven Kostanski’s DEATHSTALKER, which I’ve been pretty excited for despite not having much affection for the original. But Kostanski applying his practical/special effects wizardry to a dark fantasy action flick starring Daniel Bernhardt sounds great.

Seated for PREDATOR: BADLANDS in 3D 4DX. I adore both PREY and KILLER OF KILLERS and am very excited to see Dan Trachtenberg & the series get the deserving big-screen treatment again.

I checked out (and loved) MAGIC COP a couple of years ago and was happy to find out it was technically part 4 of a larger series. Since I’m maining Nitara right now and in the mood for vampires, I’m using that as my excuse to watch MR. VAMPIRE tonight.

I’ve started playing Nitara this week, so time to look back at the most recent season of Kombat League. I mained Takeda, who has an absurd arsenal of stylish moves and feels like an evolved Scorpion. He’s easily one of my favorite characters I’ve played in MK1 (likely tied with his cousin Kenshi).

Been itching to revisit SUPERMAN (2025) and then my disc got delayed last week. Tried in vain to find a disc locally. It finally arrived today. It’s one of my favorite movies of the year and I’m excited to watch it again tonight.

I’ve been listening to @anamanaguchi.bsky.social since 2012 and finally got to see them last Friday and they’re so awesome live. It was a genuinely energizing and uplifting experience.

It’ll probably be a while before I know if the nerve transfer takes, but surgery went well and recovery’s been pretty smooth so far. Pain has been pretty minimal & manageable, mostly just a lotta tenderness and now itching. Ready to get my second evolution cast tomorrow.

Picked up THE STREET FIGHTER collection a while back. Haven’t seen any of these and I wanted to watch a new-to-me martial arts flick, so I’m checking out the original tonight.

So Ji-sub (from ALIENOID) kills it as the lead, a former gangster whose Achilles tendon was cut as part of a peace deal. He moves slow, with the weary menace and unflinchingness of a character like Wick, unbothered by how much of a beating he takes on his way to finishing the job. It’s glorious.

I caught up on some other South Korean revenge last week with the limited series, MERCY FOR NONE, which fuckin’ rips. Plot-wise, it’s got a lot in common with JOHN WICK, but it’s grounded in the brutal violence & blurry morality you’d expect from South Korean cinema. Highly recommended.

I unfortunately didn’t vibe with BALLERINA (2025), but through Walter Chaw’s review heard about the movie it may have…borrowed a whole lotta elements from. Checking out the South Korean BALLERINA (2023) tonight.

Playing Takeda in MK1 right now, who is coded very much like a Yakuza Punisher, so that’s my excuse to revisit PUNISHER: WAR ZONE. Still the best depiction of the character and directed with so much fuckin’ flair. Ray Stevenson is pitch perfect.

It’s not been long since I rewatched SMALL SOLDIERS, but excited to check out the 4K disc tonight. Don’t upgrade everything, but this is a comfort movie and I love steelbooks. Plus, this is from the era where 4K can (in my opinion) do wonders for blending early SFX with film (see also: PITCH BLACK).
