My first “failed“ assignment! For this school (Kyoiku Shuji), kana 8th-dan involves 4 assignments a month for 18 months. at the end of the course, I’ll redo any failed pieces until they pass. I‘m not discouraged (I expected a few fails; the grading is Particular and occasionally inscrutable)

A creativity exercise from my childhood (iirc from a Klutz book about watercolor): color or paint a bunch of blobs, then take a pen and turn those blobs into things:
Pink, purple, and blue shapes on a sheet of paper, drawn over in thin black marker to make drawings of things like a chubby bird, a fish with a huge dorsal fin, a flower bud, a long narrow face, a happy worm, an eggplant and a banana, a gem, a flower, a cat’s face, and an angry little guy.

I was trying to remember how I drew people when I was my little cousin’s age (4-5 years old). This is what I remember - potatoes with stick arms/legs, and big eyes. The first one, my cousin told me, IS me (so he added the glasses). The second is me goofily drawing Thom as a potato-person.
