and it cant be infinite because if you start with some faces and build a convex polygon by only attaching faces, there is an edge of faces for new ones to be attached to, which at some point is symmetric and starts shrinking back to the original shape(but on the opposite side)

platonic solids enforce each vertex to be the same, so if you fit some amount of faces around a vertex and move along any edge, each vertex is the same and you dont get a discontinuity. that means that there is either a limited face count, or an infinite set of self intersecting(but connected) faces
