Lots of dead kids in that last one. The worst: The son of the top cop kills himself—after he’s tortured by the bad guys, tells them the police rescue plan, then realizes his father expected him to crack and that wasn’t the real plan. He jumps from a bridge—*immediately regrets it*—but it’s too late.

Did anyone read Robert Cormier’s YA? The famous one is The Chocolate War, but I remain haunted by I Am the Cheese (boy’s family in witness protection, parents killed, gets worse), The Bumblebee Flies Anyway (terminally ill children), and After the First Death (schoolbus hijacked by terrorists).

I often think of this guest post on your blog, by a Jewish and Native writer, on the question of Jewish “indigeneity.” I referenced it at a panel I moderated recently, and someone came up to me afterward to ask for the link! (But not the woman who asked about being Indigenous Italian.)
