PhD student at the Max Planck for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam and University of Maryland. Working on ML for Gravitational waves and astrophysical populations.

Trying to summarize that papers I read
Great set of talks/panels today by Kip Thorne, Thibault Damour, Zvi Bern, Dennis Lehmkuhl, Leor Barack, Luc Blanchet, Gerhard Schäfer, and Clifford Will about the history of the two body problem. At the MPI for Grav. Phys. in Potsdam.

Made a poster for a conference!

An interesting talk today at #gramaldi #amaldi16 by Gautam Satishchandran on how black holes cause decoherence of quantum experiments. The research is a thought experiment but also provides estimates on the decoherence time as a function of the distance between the experiment and the black hole.

My favorite slide of the day from #gramaldi #amaldi16. Isobel Romero-Shaw talks about how we can use spin distributions and eccentricities to differentiate between field triples, isolated binary evolution and dynamical formation. It was a cool artwork as well

My favorite slide today from Oliver Jennrich at #gramaldi #amaldi16. It shows how rich gravitational waves from extreme mass ratio inspirals are for testing general relativity

Trump has decided he wants to kill one of humanity's most sensitive instruments for understanding the universe for... about the cost of... half a fighter jet (or less). Source: www.nasa.gov/wp-content/u...

Wanted to shout out this paper: by @maximiliandax.bsky.social and @stephenrgreen.bsky.social. It allows us to perform parameter inference of binary neutron stars in a second. These binary neutron stars are measured with gravitational waves! Here’s a poster I made for the LVK meeting in Barcelona!

I had the opportunity to answer questions at the Royal Astronomical Society (@royalastrosoc.bsky.social) about GWs+ML. Thanks to all the organizers from Royal Holloway (esp. Ann and Mattia) for inviting me!

I was able to work on this fountain pen sketch of the Victoria statue before the workshop:

The algorithm also detected a hotspot at (34.190, -118.116) near the Eaton fire at 18:27 pm PST. This also seems consistent with the initial report (18:40 pm PST): www.cbsnews.com/live-updates.... The trigger was again quite loud, here's where it was detected:

This seems consistent with the initial report (also 10:30 am PST) from CBS news: www.cbsnews.com/live-updates.... The trigger was quite loud: (the x-axis is GMT+1 since that's my timezone, for PST subtract 9 hours).

Lastly here are some photos from the trip!

A few assorted sketches of Kiyomizudera and Kinkkaku-Ji. Kiyomizudera at night is so beautiful, with the red leaves. The water looks like it has a higher reflective index than even a mirror! Kinkakku-ji when the sun is setting is also beautiful, it looks like molten gold

I also drew the gundam near Odaiba on the south east side of Tokyo. Theres a shopping mall there, we hiked along random streets for a while and saw Tokyo from across the bridge.

There’s also a couple street sketches of Shinjuku at night.

Some sketches from Ni-Jo castle in Kyoto. If you’ve ever seen the Shōgun TV series, this is where the meetings between the big shots happened. Of course, that’s also true in real life, it was the home of the Tokugawas in the Edo period. (Btw no photos allowed indoors, but drawings are ok 👌)

Here’s a couple sketches from Yokohama, a city south of main Tokyo. There’s a nice pier there with cute seagulls and large boats. There’s also a cup noodle museum near the pier, but I wasn’t too interested in that (I’ve had enough cup noodles for a lifetime already).

It’s also way easier to remember what you were doing, smelling or seeing when looking back at your old sketch compared to a photograph (or at least I find). I think it’s the time you spend studying the subject and also the tactile feeling of drawing.

I visited #Tokyo, #Kyoto, #Osaka, #Nara and Mt. #Fuji for ~2 weeks. #Japan, is a cool place with amazing people! I do travel sketchbooking so I thought I would share my sketches. Usually, they’re scribbled at the sites in awkward positions, but the sketches feel way more organic that way.

Now that I’m here let show off my poster! In this paper we found evidence for eccentricity in Binary Black holes observed by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA. You can read the paper here: arxiv.org/abs/2404.14286 and my Twitter summary here: x.com/nihar_gupte/...
