As a player I would not be interested in these kinds of shenanigans unless I signed up for it specifically. I'd probably politely leave the group too if a GM surprised me with this mid-game without asking permission first.

It sounds like this GM has a very specific story he wants to tell and this is his way of making the players "buy in" without checking to see if they're interested in telling this story in the first place. A character switch/reveal like this should be discussed at session zero or day 1 of the game.
