It's hardly the ideal way to play modern systems since it squashes the 16:9 image to 4:3, but it's a fun novelty!

Some of them at least. It works with DVDs on my Blu-ray player, but BDs don't fit the screen properly. Was looking forward to watching my Urusei Yatsura BDs this way 😔

I was pretty into the online retro video game space since really getting on the internet in the 2000's and somehow never came across any anti-DKC/Rare talk. If anything I pretty much only ever saw them venerated, at least until Tropical Freeze was announced and people were mad it wasn't Metroid.

One thing I will say though if you decide to play it is not to worry about getting or seeing everything and reaching the ending. Playing to the end isn't the point, the best way to get the most out of the game is to just explore and exist in the world for its own sake.

I hope you enjoy it if you do! Yume Nikki I feel is just phenomenal. When it comes to "walk around art piece games" it stands above the rest, and a lot of that is due to the interplay between player perspective + character and theme/dream interpretation. This is the only game I consider a 10/10.

those changes and additions can be a positive for people that gel with them, since it's basically just DKC1 again but more. I also prefer the focus on nature and atmosphere in DKC1 and 3 compared to 2's more outlandish and video gamey environments.

Personally a lot of the changes DKC2 makes in level design really don't do it for me (I don't think it incorporates vertical platforming in an especially fun way, I think DKC3 does it better) and the increased difficulty and number of collectibles I find more cumbersome than engaging, but I see how-

I'm honestly not very big on DKC2, but I adore the first game and also really like DKC3 a lot.

I have a big soft spot for the old Splat skin for Windows Media Player, I used that a ton as a kid. I've downloaded it again off of the Internet Archive and I'm glad it works, but unfortunately the visualizer always freezes after the first track :(
