Simon Stiell, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary
Every economy is being besieged by climate disasters, ripping up to 5% off GDP in some countries.  And it’s people and businesses that are paying the heaviest price... So I’ll be honest – it’s grim. #cop29 #unfccc

Will Africa be the leader on Climate? Alex thinks so BUT Africa has 60% of all global solar energy POTENTIAL & 3% of renewables investment; more solar installed in Belguim last year than all of Africa. 50% of all fossil fuel investment is in Africa; it's a continent being destroyed by greed! #cop29

On Saturday eve at #COP29 I watched a presentation by @rahmstorf.bsky.social followed by Q&A. At the end of a long-heavy day of interviews, I felt whacked. This session exemplified the chasm between dangerous risk we face & our empty response to it. It all comes back to eradicating fossil fuels ....

9-10yrs ago US dominated the pavilions at COP w displays of tech achievements & + outlook for the future. Today: nowhere. Chinese pavilion is buzzing with energy, so are many others. Evidence of a shift to a multi-polar world. No one talking about the US elections except W news platforms.

On the same day extreme flooding footage from other parts of Saudi.

From Colin McCarthy (US_Stormwatch on Xitter):
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia recorded a heat index of 134°F (56.7°C) at midnight tonight.
This is near the upper limit of human survivability.

A very enjoyable interview with Prof. Lord Martin Rees, discussing existential risk, civil society, role of of experts, and pressuring policymakers to do the right thing. His recent book 'If Science is to save us' covers these questions but also highlights that we do indeed need saving!

The local coal-fired powerstation is rumoured to be the most polluting in Europe. The press say it closed on 4th October to begin a 4-5 year process of dismantling. Yet more coal arrives? 🤔

Lifted from a Tweet but this chart is very stark about the changes happening right now. Concern is compounded by the absolute insane behaviour of the British and American governments (and Slovak, POlish, Hungarian, Italian, etc,).
