You want to write today. I know you do.

Set your sights super low.

Then set them even lower.

Just tell yourself you're going to open the file, maybe read over it. Maybe add a sentence or two, maybe a paragraph, just stay in the story or the piece for a moment. Try it now if you can.

You probably have a million things to do—I know you do—but I also know you can carve out a little time to write.

Write.

Sketch out a lil plan, take a moment, do a bit of writing.

If this feels too stressful imagine some soothing spa music in the background:

🎶 plan 🎶
🎶 breathe 🎶
🎶 WRITE 🎶
🎶 relax* 🎶

❤️

*or doomscroll or goof off or go to an actual spa or to do actual work, but take a moment & write

so, when it comes to writing, the work is actually *not* mysterious or important: it’s just work.

you sit down, you write, you try not to take it seriously, or at least too seriously, BUT (1/2)

Your periodic reminder that you are free to write, no one can stop you, you can be as unhinged as you want on the page--you can always edit yourself later.

Just remember:

You are free.
You can write.

You are free to write whatever the hell you want. No one's stopping you. Go. Do it.

Writing is hard under any circumstances but any writing is writing &

You’ll feel so good having done it.

The hardest part is the dread, the anticipation, your brain telling you there’s no time, there’s laundry to fold.

The laundry can wait. Write. You’ll be glad you did.

You can write in the dark times. You can, to paraphrase Brecht, write *about* the dark times in the dark times.

You can write through the dark times.

You can write.

No one can stop you. Write. Insist on meaning & beauty & art.

Take a moment today to write. Take a minute to think of what you'd *like* to write, then find a timer and set it for 15 minutes (or however much time you have) and write. If you happen to have more time, that's great! But start w/ 15 minutes if you're feeling overwhelmed.

Some days I tell myself I'll do a *little* thing with a manuscript & then I'll be free. Today was one of those days, and of course I ended up doing way more than just the small task. But the one small task was the window.

Give yourself a little task, a friendly opening. Write.

ok! day 8!

...so you don't actually have to write every day. but if you want to eventually finish drafting a book you do have to write, and this is a day, so maybe write today.

you can do it. take a moment, set a tiny goal for yourself, make it a super easy, super achievable goal, write.

Day 7! You can do it, you’ve got some time still—write if you haven’t already! Just get some words in.

It's day 6 of 2026. If you want a super, super low stakes goal, just know you could write a 60k novel by writing ~200 words a day. That's not much. That's actually a little more than this post. Go. Write. It all adds up.

Happy first Monday of 2026! You can write today. Don't write for too long, don't set yourself a hugely ambitious goal, just color in a corner, have fun, do a little bit. It adds up, I promise.
